It sounds like a problem in the torque converter lockup/overdrive control circuit. Does limp-home turn on the check engine light? A scan tool will help in determining the problem. 43 mph is a typical speed where OD is applied by the computer unless WOT [wide open throttle] is holding the transmission shift points higher. Do you live near an AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts? If you do, they offer a free service where they will scan the vehicle for you. I hope this gives you some help.

there is NO way the torque converter lockup would just throw the trans into limp-in. forget about the parts store code reader, you get the same info from a key dance... and the problem isn't accurately identified in the PCM it's in the TCM. again the ONLY way to accurately assess the problem is with a REAL scanner reading TCM data.

Thank you delaware74b for your suggestion and yes the check engine light does come on when it goes into limp mode. With all of the cold we have been having here lately the light actually went out the other day and the car drove fine till I started driving slower and everything had a chance to warm up them the check engine light came back on and it went back into limp mode, good thing I was going slow when it shifted down. I did call a shop today and they told me that they had seen this and they probably knew what it was but they wanted to check it and they would do so for free so I will post again when I find out. I am thinking about getting it fixed and replacing it with a Chevy. Nothing to bad against Chrysler but had 2 and 2 trans went out with normal driving, just going back to a Chevy. Oh and the torque converter lockup will put the trans in limp mode, I had a 1997 Chrysler LHS (great car) that it did that on at least that is what the dealer told me when they checked it with their REAL scanner.

lockup does not put the trans into limp in. it's purpose is to take away the 10% slip that naturally occures in the converter. if the converter never locks up, it will NOT put it in limp in but will set a check engine light as no lockup will affect emissions, you can drive the car down the road, lightly apply the brake and lockup kicks out but no limpin or check engine light. There are only 2 failures either the converter never locks up or the converter wont unlock. if it won't unlock, it's like having a stickshift and forgetting to push in the clutch when stopping. It might cause a limp in but only after trying to stop!

Thank GOD you are FINALLY getting someone to look at it. The problems you are having are way beyond your knowledge or tool availability.

There are 2 types of limp in.. soft and hard. soft limp in means if you are driving, come to a stop or slow down, it goes into limp in. hard means at any moment, the trans suddenly drops to 2nd gear even at 100mph. this one sucks and can put your face into the windshield

22chrysler didn't I ask you to keep your comments off of my post especially since it seems that you really do not know what you are talking about. I know you think you do since you have a computer and you can change parts but I am going to tell you one more time DO NOT POST ON MY FOURM. You do not know me so you do not know my knowledge or my tool availability. That is all I am going to say because although you are wrong once again I do not want to get into an argument about this.

HAHAHAHA you are so funny, and so wrong. I know more about this transmission than just about anyone on this board since I LITERALLY wrote the book on how to rebuild it in 1992. At first I actually felt sorry for you and 'tried' to help you but it's really obvious you are beyond help. And just to **** you off, I'm replying to your post and will continue to do so just because it's fun watching you have hissy fits.

if u wrote the book on it in 1992 then my instructor fixed all of the mistake in 1997 when they all were failing the most.
