Dcx To Offer Sirius Satellite Streaming Video Next Year
[June 5th, 2006 - WKJeeps.com exclusive] Sirius Satellite Streaming Video will be a new option that will be offered by DaimlerChrysler on selected 2008 models. Sirius is planning to launch its nationwide live video service early next year and will use use Microsoft's Windows Media Video 9 software to help create and broadcast video programming.
In DaimlerChrysler vehicles the live streaming video will be displayed via the rear entertainment DVD screen. According to our sources, Sirius Satellite Video will be an available option in Chrysler's all-new 2008 minivans as well as other 2008 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models that currently feature DVD entertainment systems. We were told that Jeep will offer the new option in several of its models including the Grand Cherokee and Commander. Jeep will also be updating their navigation radios for 2008, replacing the current REC model with the new "RER" touch screen model. The RER is debuting in several 2007 vehicles including the Dodge Nitro, Chrysler Sebring and Jeep Wrangler.
Bringing streaming video into vehicles requires adding a small and inexpensive video decoder to the existing satellite radio receiver. Initial programming is expecting to consist of news, sports and of course plenty of children's programs. Monthly fees for the new service have not been announced yet but we assume that there will be a free subscription period for new vehicle owners as is currently offered with satellite radio systems.
