Default 1997 Sebring Jxi convertible - can't put fuel in it!!!

Hello everyone. I have a 97 sebring convertible with the 3.5 6 cylinder engine. I bought the car about six months ago from a friend. He told me that he had a new fuel pump installed and that they had to drop the fuel tank to do it. Since then, I cannot fuel the car up correctly. It backs up the fuel neck after only a few cents of fuel. I have zero idea what and why to check....

Are there check valves in the fuel neck that maybe the guys installed upside down? I have checked under the car and none of the hoses seem to be crimped or such.

I hate that it takes me 20 minutes to put in $20 worth of gas. (the people behind me in line don't seem to be happy with me either...lol).

Any advice?

Yes there's a check valve there that is designed to prevent fuel coming out in case the car rolls over. Have a talk with your buddies.

The check valve is built into the tank, not the fuel filler hose. I do not believe it is sold separate from the tank. To replace it, you must replace the tank. Check with the parts guy at a dealer to be sure about that. Anyway, to get to it, you must remove the fuel tank.
Could it be that your buddies kinked the fuel filler hose when re-installing the tank? If that's the problem, you can probably fix that without buying a new tank, though it may be necessary to drop the tank out of the car again.
