2003 Sebring - P0440 - NVLD pump

Default 2003 Sebring - P0440 - NVLD pump - Fixed - still getting error

I have a 2003 Sebring LX, sedan, 2.4L Dual overhead.

I have 2 P0440 evap errors. Smoke test revealed a bad Natural Leak Detection Pump (NVLD pump).

How easy is this to replace?


Update: Got this fixed but error didn't go away. Smoke test isn't showing anything. What is the next step?

You need to drop the fuel tank. If you think you're up to it, invest in a manual, either a factory service manual or a Haynes for details.

Thanks for the info! I took it to a shop. Their original price for part/labor/tax was $228 but went down to $200 since I was getting other stuff done.



Update: The check engine light is back on and is giving 2 P0440. Got another smoke test and nothing showed up.

I'm on my 3ed gas cap, btw.

What step should I try next?

P0440 is probably not a gas cap... but closely inspect where the cap seals. Is there a gasket that needs replaced? Is it dirty and not sealing all the way?

This code is a bitch, because it's broad and can go away for days or weeks, but come back with no symptoms.

You should've taken this to the dealer or someone that is going to have a DRB scanner and be able to follow the service manual step-by-step. The DRB scanner is omni-directional and can actuate various components of the emission system from the device. I fought with this code for years on an '04 though I'd sometimes get a P0441, but was always able to clear it before inspections and it would go away long enough for the vehicle to pass... I had to time it perfectly though and I must've had a horseshoe up my ****, because the only time of the year it'd stay clear for a while was around inspection (Early Fall). Must've had something to do with the change in weather.

I believe that switch (I believe "pumps" were used in the old LDP system) is attached to the charcoal canister. I've read that pieces of the canister can backup into hoses. Was this checked?

I didn't throw too much money at it. I checked the hoses I could get to and replaced the purge solenoid... also the gas cap. My efforts were futile.

Even though I don't still own the car, I'd love to see someone get the code, fix it successfully and follow-up. It's like an old battle wound that just won't heal.

I had the same issues with my '02. It was more of a problem in hot weather than cold. Tried replacing the gas cap, first with a cheap generic one (no help) then with an expensive one from the dealership (some help).

The problem was fixed when they stole the car and the insurance company paid it off. ;-)

they smoked/blew out the whole system a few more times and gave me a new gas cap. light hasn't come back. this is my 4th cap, btw.

still don't know what the problem was but the light is out now. and not from removing the check engine bulb, like the previous owner did.

whatever it was must have gotten blown out...

I too, got this code tonight. I remembered when I owned a 2000 Intrepid, that a friend of mine, told me about how to do the key entry code thing on the ignition, so I tried it. Voila.. it gave me the p0440 code. I bought my 2004 Sebring, and well, good thing I put warranty on my engine, and its only been 15 days since I bought it from the used car lot. Time to see tomorrow, what the answers being. It was also certified and e-tested before I bought it, so who knows. Hoping its the gas cap seal, and just something minor. Good thing I can drive the car without any issues. Do you all think it could be the change of weather too? how does that fair?? Really, weather change could effect it??? hmmmm....

It isn't dark gray.. is it?

Weather change affected mine.. I'd say the code was on 10-11 months out of the year. Only went off in the fall.

The vapor pressure of gasoline is affected by temperature. It gives off less vapor as the temperature drops. I suspect that is the reason this code goes away in cold weather. Just a guess.
