Default FACT OR FICTION ON THE 2.7 SWAP FROM 04 TO 01

Im not really sure if anyone really knows what is fact or fiction. I have rebuilt alot of different motors over the years diesel and gas. The only differance in one from the other is a computer, sensers, and fuel injection. So this swap must be possible. Some how some way. I think if we all stand up to the plate with all of ower experiences this can happen. So lets make this happen. thanksRuss rjasp2000@yahoo.com

this question is for dan havner please explain again (crossfire tech)

I have a 2001
dodge grand caravan (awd) 3.8L. The engine blew so I replaced it w/ a 2005 dodge grand caravan 3.8L. I had to switch the top part of the engine with my 01 parts. I also used the flywheel from the 01. When i went to start it back fires at the manifold. I took the intake manifold off and tried to start and it fires out of all cylinders but it's off. Van is fireing with valves open w/ intake stroke. I changed the crank sensor and cam sensor still same problem. One dodge dealer said that the flywheel and crank shaft is different so an 05 engine cannot work with 01. Another dodge dealer said thats not true because its the same short block so the engine is same i just neet to change top (which i did). Is the crankshaft the same for 05 and 01? Also I know that the flywheels are different but im using the 01 flywheel. Also are the crankshafts different, some people say yea some say no.

I am not cross fire but can help you with this problem.
The Flexplate is not the right part number for the model year.
Make sure the correct Flexplate is used if doing an engine swap. There are major differences in the spacing of the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor slots in the Flexplate used on vehicles equipped with a Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) III and vehicles equipped with the Next Generation Controller (NGC). The 1995-2003 models use the SBEC III, which has two 40-pin connectors. The 2004 models use the NGC, which uses four 38-pin connectors. Using the wrong Flexplate will usually result in a no-start. To avoid problems, use the original Flexplate from the vehicle or the correct new part. The Flexplate used on vehicles with an SBEC III engine controller has 3 groups of 4 slots spaced around the circumference. The Flexplate used on vehicles with an NGC has a slot every 10 degrees around the circumference except for one long slot where 2 slots are joined and 180 degrees around from that an area with 2 filled slots (a solid section).
The Camshaft Timing Gear is not the right part number for the model year.
Make sure the correct Camshaft Timing Gear is used if doing an engine swap. There are minor differences in the spacing of the Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor slots in the timing gear used on vehicles equipped with a Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) III and vehicles equipped with the Next Generation Controller (NGC). The 1995-2003 models use the SBEC III, which has two 40-pin connectors. The 2004 models use the NGC, which has four 38-pin connectors. Using the wrong Camshaft Timing Gear will usually result in a no-start. To avoid problems, use the original Camshaft Timing Gear from the vehicle or the correct new part

The fuel problem you are having could it be what they are talking about , the flex fuel and non flex fuel. They say you have to change the fuel injectors, intake, and cam sprokets to make this work.

no i dont think that is it it has to be the computer it runs everything the only solution i can think of is to swap to the right engine or change all electical system over which nobody knows how.

and yes the people I have talked to say yes to the flex and non flex fuel. The way it looks is the cam gears, flywheel, injectors, intake cam and crank sensors have to be changed. So if you used the new flywheel you have to pull it to change it. I am going to get more info tomorrow on the motor from the 04 I am suppose to get. I will probably get a motor out a 01-03 to make it simple. good luck
