L front wheel grinding at 50mph?
Hi,
I'm new to here! just bought a 97 LXI convertible with 57k that the L front wheel starts to grind at the speed of 50mph? I feel the grinding in the steering wheel, but no pulling or misalignment but this is quite annoying! wondering if it's the wheel bearings that need to be packed that would cause this? or could it be something else? What should I check first?
Please help[&o]

It could be the bearing or the disk brake. At 50mph, if you turn the wheel slightly left and/or right does the noise go away?? If it does, then it's a wheel bearing.

PS, I thought the 97 model was a JXI not LXI.

Hi,
Yes, you're right it's a jxi...lol I just bought the car and got it mixed up!
When I turn the wheel to the right I dont hear it, took it back to the idiots where I bought the car and they tell me they can't hear anything but road noise?? they just didn't want to fix the problem! I went back up there to talk to the manager and he said he want's to take it to a private shop to have it looked at again. I can feel a constant vibration in the wheel and under my feet too when it starts to get up in speed. You would have to be deaf to not hear it!
I just wanted to know if there was possibly anything else it could be causing it??
Thanks for the reply

It sounds like a wheel bearing. When the noise goes away when you turn, it's a good sign that one bearing has gone south...sorry. If the shop youbought it at won't help yuo then tell them you will take it to another shop and get it fixed and send them the bill. They might take a closer look, and you seriously.

Yes, my dad also think's it's the bearing. They want to take it to an shop that they use to look at it tomorrow but I still dont trust them! I'm gonna see what they come up with, and if not I will be taking it somewhere on my own for sure! [:@]

Well just as an update...took the car to a mechanic who discovered the noise was coming from the side bearing's in the differential! [:@]the day after I took it to him I could notice hard down shifting, and delayed up shifting with acceleration...place where I bought the car said the price to fix it would be over 2k so he offered to put me in another car or give me my down payment backso I opted to just get my $$$ back and call it a day with those loser's...[sm=lame.gif]
I found a 98 Jx for 3k that seem's to shift just fine[sm=icon_rock.gif]and no funny noise's!!
