Default Locating Fuel Pump on 99 Sebring LX Coupe

So our mechanic claims the fuel pump should be under the seat, but all there is under there is the fuel gauge sending unit!

Where have they hidden the pump, anyone know?

Thanks

Default Found it, but still won't stay running!

So there are 2 accesses under the back seat, one obvious in the center, and one on the passenger side, kind of under the carpet and no so obvious.

Put in the new pump, car started up, idled for 5 minutes and died.

What to check next?

Thanks

Default No Codes

Not even a check engine light, just dies and/or will not start.

You need to take a systematic approach to finding out what is wrong: Don't assume that the new fuel pump is working. Check for fuel, spark. If either is missing, you will need to figure out why.
Not all codes light the check engine light. Scan for codes if you can.

Default Systematic Approach

Thanks DCotter, I am trying, this isn’t even my car.
Here is my systematic approach, over 10 days or so!
  • Car dies
  • Distress call
  • Tow car home
  • Try Starting fluid test
  • Car sputters and tries to start
  • Conclusion Fuel Related
  • Contact mechanic for price
  • He says it’s under seat, no sweat
  • Order fuel pump (~65)
  • Open up center access
  • Discover gauge sender, no pump
  • Waste 36 hours trying to locate the pump
  • Buy Haynes manual @ AutoZone $25
  • Chapter 4 figure 5.3 plainly shows the cleverly concealed second access under carpet and foil.
  • Replace pump
  • Start and idle for 5 minutes
  • Back out of shop for test drive.
  • Car Dies
  • Malted Beverages
  • Contemplate Cash for Clunkers program
  • Scrap CFC, owner too broke.
  • Borrow Bro in-laws tow dolly
  • Tow to Pro
  • Sleep like a baby!
Thanks All

Amazing how those malted beverages clarify the whole thing. Let us know how it all shakes out.

Default On the road again !

So the pro found the Crankcase Positioning Sensor to be bogus, back on the road 3 hours after we dropped it off.

No idea of the damages, it was one of those friend of a friend yada yada!

Thanks again

That would be the Crankshaft Position Sensor. If that was bad, there would have been no spark, and the engine computer would have lit the check engine light, and generated an error code.
Anyway, back on the road is good.
