Default Weird problem

2004 Sebring Sedan LX, ~70,000 miles. Maybe someone has experienced this and knows what it is, but when I was traveling about 55 mph the car seemed to lose power briefly (maybe a second) and there is a ding sound at that exact moment but no dash warning lights. It almost seemed like the car shut down for that second because the steering stiffened along with decceleration. This happened once before like 2 years ago, only lasted a second, a ding sound, no dash warning lights. Any ideas?

Any codes? What engine does that car have?

It's the 4 cylinder engine, it's a base model Sebring. As far as codes, I never thought to check, would it put codes out even if no dash warning light is present? Basically in terms of servicing the car, other than fixing the tranny leaking issue when I first bought the car about 4.5 yrs ago I haven't had anything else done besides routine oil changes, blower motor resistor replacement, and front brake replacement. I haven't gotten a tune up or anything like that.

The first thought I had when this happened 2 yrs ago was that maybe really bad constant vibration caused by the horrible road I was driving ~50 mph on at the time jolted something for a second. But this time I was on a mostly smooth road so there goes the only idea I had.

Not all codes turn the check engine light on. Checking for codes is the first place to start. Try Autozone. They might do it for you for free.
