Default Problem Solved!

Yes. Attended a 300C Rally last month and none of the others sounded like mine, although there weren't any SRT-Designs there.

This morning I have solved the problem, ticking almost completely gone (just a very faint noise now). I removed the silver engine cover to give it a clean and, looking at the engine from the front of the car, I noticed a bad wear mark on the back lefthand corner of the cover. This coincides with a thick vertical cable which is attached to the bulkhead just above the cover. The cable also showed signs of wear. I wrapped the cable with some heating pipe insulation, about 1 cm thick, and hey presto, problem solved! As I have said right from the beginning, I was convinced it was sound being transmitted from the fuel injectors. Clearly, that was vibrating through the engine cover, into this thick and very stiff cable directly into the bulkhead and into the cabin. So much for the experts at Chrysler (or is it Fiat????)!

Arrow on attached photo shows point where cable contacts engine cover. Pipe insulation sleeve is in position on the vertical cable.

Hi
Thanks for the picture, Was it a cable or pipe? it looks like the DPF pressure sensor pipes (2 of them) you have rapped around as just above it is the pressure sensor. They go to the exhaust

Aha! That would explain why, as I said, it was a very thick, stiff cable!!! It was, in fact, 2 pipes!! Oops, thanks Merlin for pointing that out.

Hopefully the dealer can sort the ticking noise out. I have three crd's and haven't any ticking noise but one of them did backfire on the weekend and the missus thought she was heading for the moon!

Hi Organist,
What a find this has been for me. I too have a 300C Diesel and the ticking noise you describe has also been an irritation to me with my car since I bought it new in 2006. I have raised it with the Dealer in Kilmarnock (Bickets) but they said it was "normal" for this engine.

Very interested in your solution but would love to be able to see the picture you had attached. Unfortunately when I click on it, it says something like I do not have enough privileges or something like that. I did join the forum with my email address, username and password but even after logging in I still get the same message.

Can you or anyone else help me to see your picture? It was very good of you posting the solution and I can't wait to try it out.

Hi Harry,
Strangely, I get the same message when I try to look at MY OWN picture. I have attached another copy to this message so you should be able to download it.
This solution only reduced the ticking. I have got used to the lighter ticking, but last week my alternator failed and I had a new one installed (thankfully under warranty). Now the ticking has gone completely. So, I guess it was a combination of the two. Hope you don't need new main bearings, as that didn't help my problem ticks at all, just cost Chrylser a load of money!!
Good luck with solving yours.

Hi again Organist57,

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Unfortunately, I still get the same message when trying to view the picture. But no worries, I don't want you to go to any more trouble and I have a good idea of what to do from your very good description.

I'm completely with you on the description of the ticking noise - it's just like a noisy tappet and related to engine speed. But unlike a tappet it's heard most under acceleration. I see what you mean too about the bad wear mark at the back left corner of the engine cover. I've repositioned the attachment at the top of the thick cable (away from the slot in the bulkhead) as it's obviously chafing the cable.

I bought a pack of insulating water pipe tubes today (the type for water pipes in the loft) from Homebase in Ayr today and will cut one down and try fitting it over the thick cable (or twin pipes) within the next few days and will post again to let you know how it goes.

It's interesting about your alternator - not sure that I want to wish a failure of that on my car as it's out of warranty. If it were to cure the problem though, it would be worth it as that ticking noise is a constant irritant and spoils what is otherwise a great car.

Thanks again for your time posting a response.

Harry
