Default Loud clunk w/4wd lo

Hi everyone,

I engage the 4wd hi/low switches weekly just to make sure they're working correctly while I'm in warranty.

Question: When I change to 4wd high, it's a very smooth switch with just a small noise. However, when I change to and from 4wd low, there is usually a loud clunk - enough to where the truck vibrates a bit. Is this normal, or something I need to have checked out?

It seems to function just fine once I get it switched over, but it engages sort of violently.

Thanks!

Thanks Bill - it's so loud that it sounds like something is getting broken down there, so I was a bit concerned. Glad to hear it's not unique to my vehicle.

Default shift into low gear

you cant shift into low unless the vehicle is stopped. has to be in netrual with foot on the brake.before you shift in low gear.

Check out page 285 of your manual (assuming you have a 2008). The "preferred procedure" to change into either high or low is to shift into neutral from a slow roll (2-3 mph), select high/low, and shift back into gear after the position indicator light stops flashing.

I'm not sure why they prefer the vehicle to be moving. It works just fine doing it as you describe as well, which Chrysler refers to as the "alternate procedure".

If it clicks your starter probably needs to be replaced...if nothing, then I'm not sure.

By the way, you'll probably get a better response on this if you don't post it on a 4WD thread in a Chrysler Aspen forum.
