Now they are coming on when the a/c power button is off, on a cold start and not shutting off. sensor?

You got me on that one, I don't know what would cause the fans to start immediately if the AC is in the off position other than a faulty sensor. I will look into this, others here may post something in the mean time but I will see what I can find out.

well, it seems to be intermittent. came home today and started the car with a/c off, and they didn't come on. as soon as i press a/c button, compressor kicks in, then about 2 seconds later radiator cooling fans kick on. I don't know, I guess I'll check the coolant temp sensor.

I thought of this after my previous post. Did you check the fan relay? It is is the power distribution center (PDC).

wasn't sure problem sounded like the relay or not.

It is possible that the relay contacts could be burned or pitted and therefore sticking closed. I am not sure about your specific car, but, I would bet that there are other relays of the same type used in the PDC. You could swap the relays and see if you still have the problem. Just make note of what you are swapping with because the ASD relay is probably in there and if the relay is the problem, your car won't start. Before swapping, just make sure the relays are identical!
