Default Need Help With Failed Smog

2006 Chrysler Pacifica, Touring, 3.5L, Automatic, FWD, 163k mi

My Wife's Pacifica has failed CA smog. She had previous codes come up for P0420 and P0456. My FIL cleared the codes and reset the MIL she had before she went to get her smog test. The MIL did not illuminate during the test, however it did fail for I/M Readiness. It did pass the emissions/sniffer test on the dyno.

Since the test, both of her codes and the light have come back on. I reset them whenever I can. As of right now, here is where it stands on the I/M Readiness (I just erased both codes - I do realize that also resets some of the I/M)

SOOO what are you asking here? Is there a way to cheat the system and not fix the actual issue ,,, not really.
Take it to a shop have them replace the UBBER
expensive CA cats and find the evap leak ten drive for a few days then U will be good.

I am not trying to circumvent the system. I am trying to make the vehicle pass smog. The smog tech told my wife her gas cap was tested and was good. As for the cats, they aren't horribly expensive, but I rather not replace them based on a whim. The emissions out of the tailpipe passes just fine.

I did see a thread about some rubber lines under the plastic engine cover. I will look at that soon.

Looks like I am alone on this one....

Just because the vehicle is throwing a 0420 does not mean that my supposed, uber expensive CA cat is bad.... to throw money at parts is stupid without a proper diagnosis. any two bit hack knows that....

There are a number of things that could be causing this p0420 catalyst inefficiency code. The most common thing is the catalytic converter itself is no longer functioning properly. The other likely thing is the rear O2 (oxygen) sensor is no longer working properly. Other things could include exhaust leaks, damaged exhaust pipes, damaged O2 sensor wiring/connectors, plugged catalytic converter, etc.

Considering the emissions sniffer test passes leads me to believe it is not the cat being inefficient.... looks like I will have to just diagnose this myself
