I'm not sure about the fluid question, but I think new fluid with it's "highly modified friction" additives is the way to go.

I read that the motor mounts have to be loosened to get to some hidden pan bolts. I didn't have time or I would have done it myself. So, I opted for the flush method.

Can't speak for Ford but what you speak of did happen in my Mom's 86 Buick Century. She had tranny problems and a shop changed the fluid and after getting home, the fluid change made it worse. The dealer at that time said it was possible.. I had never heard of it before. She had to have the tranny rebuilt. I am not sure how many miles it had at that point in time.
