Hi! I'm trying to sell my fathers car. It's a 2006 PT Cruiser Touring with 36,000 Miles on it. It's just been sitting in the garage as my dad has been too old to drive it now for a while. The check engine light came on and I took it to the dealer and the dealers all wont work on cars this old. I took it to a random mechanic and they said that it was a problem with the computer that only a dealer can fix. So no one is willing to work on it. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Here's the problem with the car from the mechanic

U0100 Lost Communications with ECM/PCM
U0101 Lost Communications with TCM

Starter does not engage properly. Performed Global reset. When engine is running codes are stored. When engine is off and key is on codes are active.

 

Have you considered selling it as-is and being upfront about the issues?

 

U codes associated with check sum errors usually cannot be repaired. I have run into 3 of them that I replaced the computer and it fixed the problems. Hope this helps someone.

 

Many shops have aftermarket places they go to swap computers. You just have to find the right shop to swap out your old one.
