2.8 diesel flat battery

Good Morning All, regarding the current drain on wifeys’ GV, I have found that it’s very difficult to determine the current drain on individual components that are energised by the IOD fuse. The only way I’ve found is to disconnect all components so that there is little or no current being drawn through the IOD fuse, and then reconnect each component in turn until I got a spike in the current drain.
The only culprit I’ve found is the combined 6 CD multi-changer (which, ironically, has never been used) and the CD Receiver unit. I’ve disconnected these, and will replace with a suitable after-market item – if I can find one that’ll fit!! (any ideas?)
Regarding the battery swap, the engine now cranks much faster than it ever did on the Red Top “Haribo” battery. As this is a global forum, I should point out that Haribo make jelly sweets that only kids seem to enjoy.
My thanks go out to all contributors especially dcotter0579, willow67 and merlin – thanks guys!

My daughter really likes the Hairbo jelly sweets. We call them gummy bears or whatever the shape happens to be.
In regards to the gel batteries, I visit other forums that are specific to my IHC Travelall.
Among the recent posts there have been several comments about the poor performance of the gel batteries. It seems that they fail prematurely quite often or fail to recharge completely. Which results with the owners stranded in places, some of which are really inconvenient.
The only real advantage I have heard about the gel batteries is you can mount them in any just about any position since there isn't a real top and bottom compared to a lead acid battery. Which can be a real advantage if you do real hard core off road four wheeling or rock crawling with the vehicle in positions the manufacturer never imagined possible when the vehicles were built.

Lead-acid replacement for Red Top gel battery
Hi All
I'm new to this Forum as I've just bought a 2007 2.8 CRD Executive from a local main dealer and guess what. Its fitted with an almost new lead acid battery. The salesman admitted the gel batteries are a pain and they convert them to L/acid. The battery is an Exide Excel EB741 74AH 680A, fits perfectly and was half the price of a Red Top.
Hope this helps.
Regards John.

Just a thought. I had a similiar problem with another vehicle ( GMC Safari Van ) and it was driving me nuts. It turned out to be the lamp in the glove box. It was staying on all the time. I accidently noticed it ariving home one night. I disconnected the lamp and no problem since. I hope your problem is a simple fix like this. Try not to over look the small stuff like I did. Good Luck

Hi everyone, I had the same problem with the battery going flat in my 06 2.8 CRD grand voyager, But it only started after i fitted the 6 disc dvd player and over head screen. This was a genuine Chrysler kit and came with all the correct wiring harnes and full instalation instructions. The harnes conects to the back of the permenant live 12v plug so that the dvd has constant suply for its memory. This must be a masive drain on the battery for some reason. If i drove it every dat it was ok, but park it up on a saturday and come monday morning it was flat as a pancake.
I bought a solar trickle charger and this semed to cure this weekend pancake, but if i left it for 2 days, it was dead as a door nail.
It had a gell batery fitted, when i took it back to the dealers they changed it for a lead acid battery but this made no difference.
my solution was to change the suply plug to the switched 12v suply and this cured the pancace issue.
The only annoying part about this fix is the dvd changer has to go through its complete search for discs every time you start up.

Thanks to all - I've had problems and based on the advice on here, gone for the XS3600 also (the lower end allows me to charge my motorbike battery) which seems to be sorting me out nicely. I am using it overnight when it's cold as I only do a 7 mile each-way journey, using the auxiliary heater, fan with aircon (for the windscreen) and lights so it doesn't get chance to charge itself back up.

Hi I replaced the battery on my 06 2.8d auto voyager a year ago and keep it charged regular because of the short journeys. I now have the problem first thing in the morning where it tuns over and over and takes a long time to fire up. Once it starts you get an initial cloud of smoke then it runs and starts perfecly all day.
Went to my Chrysler dealer for advice who said glow plugs don't break down and relays never fail and they do not keep either in stock.
Please can someone advise me how to check and find the problem - I have multimeter just need to know easiest way to go about it.

I don't know if it's the cause of your problem, but I'd say that your dealer is being a little rash with his statements - glow plugs do fail, as do relays, so worth checking these.
As a matter of interest, do you always wait until the glow plug light goes out before you start the engine?
