Many say, including the books, a "quick learn" procedure should be performed using a DRBIII scanner anytime a TCM is replaced. That and verify the "pinion factor" is correct. On the other hand, many change the TCM and press on without it and don't report any problems.

thanks since im a shade tree mechanic i did not have the scanner you mentioned should i have a shop or the dealer perform that service and what is a typical charge. i drove the van after installing the remanufactured tcm and it shifted correctly accelerating and decelerating EXCEPT it still has a hard downshift to 1st when coming to quick complete stop. if i coast to the stop it is less harsh or not present. is that something that the scan and pinion factor would cure? i told the dealer about the hard downshift problem when the van was still under the 100k drivetrain warranty and i only got the sunshine repair treatment. I have always followed the service recommendations and did have the transmission serviced as required. im surprised it lasted as long as it did 161k before needing any service based on other owners that i have talked to about their transmission issues. Thanks for your reply, Rollo

Considering the harsh shift the $80-$120 fee may be worth it. They can do the quick learn, check pinion, and check for any software updates your new TCM may be lacking. Considering a DRBIII scanner can cost a few grand few have them outside of dealerships and shops.
