Default Boot wont open without key

Hi. We have a 2001 voyager. The fob works the central locking, but we are unable to open the boot without the key.

Any suggestions...?

I believe there is some tie up between the built in alarm system and the boot lock mechanism. My first Voyager had this problem and also the alarm LED was/is on solid. As these systems are well known for packing up I suspected that someone had done something in the boot to effectively disarm the system. As such I have just left it like that. I have subsequently bought another Grand Voyager and all its doors function correctly.

Chrysler charge a lot to sort out alarm systems on these cars so my advice to you is just put up with it. You can lock and unlock all doors from the boot. If you turn the boot lock to the right and hold it firmly in that position all other doors will unlock. Turning to the left will lock all doors.

Thanks. I think the fob unlocks the boot, it's just the button on the boot door doesn't realease the catch. I have to turn the key, to make the catch open.

chances are, the mechanism in the tailgate is all dried up and would need a clean and lube.

when you say 'button' - mine has a wide rubberised handle that you press to open - is this the same as yours (same year as mine)?. If so, I had exactly the same problem as you had - it's the contacts inside this switch that corrode so the switch no longer works. It's easy to test (apart from the fact that you have to take out the plastics inside the boot lid). Once you have access to the lock on the inside, you need to short across the two wires that go to the lock release button, but you need to use a 2200 ohm resistor (about 10 pence from Maplin) to short these wires (if you just use a normal wire, it doesn't work - I know this from experience - the ECU takes an unballasted short as a problem with the wiring so doesn't release the lock) - if the button is the problem, then the lock will release as soon as you short across the wires (with the doors unlocked)

When I looked for a replacement switch, it was going to be silly money (about £70 for a second hand switch and there was no guarantee that it would be any better than mine). The solution I used was to get a heavy duty stainless steel button switch from Maplins (about £5) and drill a hole next to the existing switch to fit this. You will need to wire the 2200 ohm resistor in series in the wiring. Mine works perfectly now.

Yes, mine is like yours - the rubber strip button to open the boot.

Thanks for that, will get hubby to take a look!
