Hi Guys

I have a similar problem with my 2003 (53 Reg) 2.5 crd Grand Voyager the temp gauge rarely goes above the quarter mark and the heater only gets Luke warm ive recently changed the anti freeze but its still the same so im thinking of trying this second thermostat idea.

My question is which one is the right size to fit in the top hose without the need of cutting the new one to fit... ill use two jubilee clips ether side of the stat to hold it in place

thanks in advance
Pete

Ah yes, it appears the Renault 5 thermostat will fit in the top hose immediate without mod. (Wish I'd known that at the time!).

Renault 5 thermostat 1986-86 1.4 petrol 86 or 88C

Drill one small 1.5mm hole in the side to stop air locks. Fits directly inside the top hose, push it about 3-4" down with the wax bulb facing the back (engine side) secure with a single jubilee clip.

Did it last week, works brilliant

Hi again guys

Well managed to get a thermostat and it says on the box QTH 144 is this the right one? Did the job today and i couldn't get the stat in the hose it only went in as far as the flange on the new stat and i did,nt want to force it in so put it all back together, took it back to the shop and they assured me it is the Renault 5 one but im not sure.

My question is if it is the right one how do you get the stat in the upper hose without forcing it has anyone else had this problem or do you have to force it in

thanks in advance

Hi... yes QTH144 is the correct part...

At the risk of repeating my earlier posts... :-)

1. Let the engine cool down
2. Remove the top black plastic engine cover
3. Pump out all of the coolant from the expansion/header tank
4. Remove the hose clamp from the top hose, where it joins the metal coolant pipe from the engine (by the battery LHS)
5. Rub a bit of vaseline or similar in the top hose.
6. Take the QTH144 stat with a hole drilled in it, push it into the hose with the wax pellet holder facing the bulkhead, it will drop in upto the little rim easily, then just rock it around to get it inside the hose, I used a 36mm deep socket to push it down inside... it was quite easy.
7. Tighten a jubilee clip around the body of the stat, re-fit the hose & clamp.
8. Refil the cooling system & run the engine.

Make sure to drill a little hole in the stat, otherwise you'll get an airlock behind the wax pellet and the stat wont open & you'll overheat the engine.

Start to finish takes no more than 15 mins

Enjoy

Make sure the hole is really small....approx 1.5mm

I drilled two at 2mm the first time and it really affected the warm up time, so I had to get another stat and do it again.
