Help, Gearbox oil change
#21
Comment was not aimed at you, apologies if it came through that way. It was based in general as there seems to be an incredible lack of knowledge out there specifically from people calling themselves "gearbox specialists". I have had a number of people tell me that well known gearbox rebuilders have suggested that either normal gearbox oil is suitable for these boxes and that the oil does not need regular servicing.
Indeed my first Voyager had a new box fitted ta 57,000 miles. The receipt for the job clearly stated tha tthey had installed SX75W-90 GL5 in there. I confirmed this by draining it asap. How can any company that supposedly specialises in gearboxes not understand the reaction between sulphur and yellow metals???

Hi Glowplug, No worries. TBH I've been running auto's for a few years now , either that or old bangers as a second car so I've not bothered with anything but basic servicing on them.
I do the oil in my auto' box every year, just before I set off on our big holiday.
That reminds me, i must do it again ASAP. Its a pain to do as there's no drain plug so you get the oil in a big woosh. Then the oil drips out as you try to put the sump back with a new gasket. The only answer would be to leave it for ages to dry out.
As you say using the correct oil is a MUST in anything, I'm amazed that a 'gearbox specialist' filled your box with the wrong oil. Could have been nasty!

Hi Just a update, my voyager did the 650 miles round trip to Cornwall and back pulling a 26 foot caravan with no problems what so ever, I forgot how hilly the A30 was, up and down for about 70 miles, replacing the intercooler solved the problem of the car getting hot going up big hills (Thank god)
Not sure how much the tank holds but it took a full tank each way.
So this weekend I think its time to change the gearbox oil after such a long hilly trip.
Pete :-)

Yes, BUT MANUAL GEARBOXES ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just make sure you put in the correct oil. If you have an AUTO you MUST MUST MUST put in the correct ATF.
All the manual gearboxes are made by a German company, Getrag. The 1996-2000 all use a 10W-40 !!!!!ENGINE OIL!!!!!!!. The manual states that it must conform to CCMC-G5 specs BUT this is an old spec and has now been superceeeded by the A3/B3 spec. So basically any good grade modern oil is fine. I use either FUCHS TITAN fully synth or Castrol GTX Petrol or Diesel variants. (Diesel oil has more detergent so keeps things cleaner).
Here is the note from the 1998 workshop manual
Note it says that the factory fill was 5W-30, do not use this use only 10W-40 which it clearly states is the fill alternative. This manual is for the 1998 and ON. To my knowledge the boxes were the same through all the years but phone Chrysler just to make sure.
(For the Diesels)
A-598 MANUAL TRANSAXLE
Safety goggles should be worn at all times
when working on these transaxles. The A-598
manual transaxle uses SAE 5W-30 engine oil, meeting
SG and/or SG-CD qualifications, as the factory
fill lubricant. SAE G5 10W-40 engine oil is a suitable
service fill alternative.
This transaxle combines gear reduction, ratio selection,
and differential functions in one unit. It is
housed in a die-cast aluminum case.
(For the 2L Petrol)
A-558 MANUAL TRANSAXLE—RHD VEHICLES
Safety goggles should be worn at all times
when working on these transaxles. The A-558
manual transaxle uses SAE 5W-30 engine oil, meeting

Voyager 2.5TD Gearbox oil change
I can not understand why its so difficult to find the correct type and amount
of oil required to complete a gearbox oil change on my voyager 2.5TD,I have spoken to Chrysler dealers and looked on the web and now I have bought myself 2 litres of 75/90 at £12.50 a litre, but I think I need to add more oil to correctly refill the gearbox. The gearbox did have a leak so I only drained out 2.1 litres. Can anyone please tell me the amount of oil I need to refill the gearbox to the correct level.
