Unhappy Voyager 2.5 turbo diesel Timing. HELP! pleasee...

Hello everyone, Ive had my friends Chrysler Voyager 2.5 turbo diesel 16v with a VM engine sat on my driveway since last december now, the Cambelt broken and broke a hydraulic tappet and couple of rocker arms. I replaced them and re-laped all the valves down as some where leaking a little and put it all back together with a new head gasket. As the cam belt was broken and there were no marks on the cover/pulleys Im LOST! The camshaft and its pulley has no key so makes things even harder. Ive been trying to figure it out for way to long now and I know I should take it to a specialist but the nearest is over 80 miles away. Im very experienced with cars and done hundreds of cam belts as I worked in a garage years ago but never one as complicated as this. and also, I know I need to lock both intake and exhaust cams with a pin and also lock the flywheel but I cannot afford the tools so searching around Ive read that you can insert a allien key in the locking pin holes for the cams, is that possible? really need this information and more if you can find please! Thanks in advanced

Steve, would you happen to know how to lock the exhaust cam - I have the tool, just can figure out how to access the point of entry - there's so little space between the firewall and the exhaust side of the engine? Many thanks, kkc.

its the same as the inlet cam, just very hard to see!! there is a locking point behind the starter for the flywheel. you really do need the special tools to lock the cams though, as the hole in the cylinder head is bigger than the hole in the cam!

Default done...!!!

Hi Lentec

Thanks.. in fact yesterday, I removed the bonnet (hood), the wipers, wiper assembly and then had v. good access to see the exhaust cam locking nut. In the end it was not that difficult.

The only issue was that my friend removed the timing belt with only the flywheel and inlet camshaft locked....!!!

Yesterday, I inserted the exhaust cam locking pin and felt my way by turning the exhaust cam approx. +/-40° until the lock pin slipped in fully. I am pretty sure I have locked it correctly. Each cam spindle has two notches and these face each other squarely now. I'll know when i install the pulleys as I have punch holed markers and there is a mark from pulley to spindle as well. So if these align roughly... that should be just fine. We will turn the motor manually a few turns once the timing belt is on to feel if valves are touching cylinder heads..!

Phew..!

Thanks, kkc.

Default all done

Rodger, Thanks for your suggestion. My friend and I finished the work yesterday night (Sunday). The engine runs perfectly. Very happy....!!!

I agree on the Jeeps it's easier to change many things but on the Voyager the engine is mounted transverse leaving very little working room between the firewall and the engine block.

Thanks for all help, everyone.

Regards, kkc.
