98 T&C Nightmare / Help Much Appreciated
98 Town & Country 3.8 L Lxi 113,000 miles
It has been at our local mechanic shop for nearly a month. The problem started as an intermittent surge/jerk at highway speeds. We also had a battery issue around the same time which turned out to be a bad cell. The battery was of course replaced. A couple days later the surge/jerking got worse, the service engine soon light came on and then the engine stalled. It would not start for about a hour until the engine cooled slightly. I took it to our local parts store who scanned for codes. The code was P0505 (Idle Air Control System). The next day we brought it to the shop and they could not find that code but they found a code for the camshaft position sensor and changed it out. We picked it up and made it about 4 miles and same thing again. Next they changed a coil pack and the idle air control motor again no fix. Next they changed the crankshaft position sensor and again no fix. They then changed the camshaft position sensor again thinking the first one was faulty. They said they were receiving these codes before changing each part ( in case you were wondering ). Next they bought an ECM from a 99 model and sent it out to be flashed. We picked it up and it ran great for about 25 miles then the same problem again. Then they said it had a wiring problem which they fixed so we went to pick it up and it started backed up 15 feet then died when we put it in drive. It has not started since that I am aware of and it is still at their shop. I have paid them about as much as what it is worth and the last time I paid them I made it very clear there would be no more money out of my pocket. Does anyone have any ideas as to a root cause for this failure. I can't afford to take it to the dealer now which is what I guess I should have done to begin with.
