A604/41TE Axle play

A604/41TE Axle play
I'm in the process of replacing worn differential bearings in a 41te - 02 Sebring convertible with a 2.7.
I have the ASTG manual and the FSM.
I got to this point because I noticed the axles were loose - in fact they were rattling around audibly.
I know the bearings are shot because the carrier had play inside the case and it's supposed to be preloaded.
But, I'm wondering if the carrier bores are worn where the axle shafts are supported.
I can't find any specs on this - only a few references on the web to wear requiring carrier replacement.
I have new axles and when I slide them through the carrier to engage the side gears, they seem reasonably tight, but there's a slight amount of play. Considering there's no bearing and the carrier is basically acting as a bushing, I expect it shouldn't be a tight fit.
But I'd like to be certain before I bolt it all back together that I'm taking care of everything that needs it.
Any suggestions?
