Unhappy Famous INOP cluster problem

Guys, I have a 2004 PT cruiser. The cluster is totally in-op. Guages and odometer reading doesn't work. I have found that if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it ALWAYS works. I think something is being reset in the cluster module, but fails soon after.

I have read tons of threads, and people said there was a loose wire behind the cluster fuse box, and another person said there was some kind of wire from the battery straight to the cluster, but they didn't specify how to find it.

I have read that there was a recall during 2001-2002 and Chrylser did a flash to the cluster module and updated it with new software. Now, as my luck would have it, there is no recall for my vehicle, but I am wondering if a flash and software update would help my situation or maybe one of you experts can tell me how to fix this problem before I starting spending money like crazy with no positive outcome.
