Probably not from the battery terminal, but if it is loose at the other end of the cable, Yes ...absolutely

Also if the clips dont have a tight fit will that cause it??
No...There should NEVER be enough current at that point to "Smoke" anything. As I mentioned, Its not a critical circuit Ground, and those straps usually fall off without being noticed.......

Does the vehicle run with the strap disconnected????

we have not fully started it with ground connected cause it was smoking wires. The van would not start without this ground connected though, monday it was -20 below outside and I went to start van, it tried to turn over but would not, then when I tried it agian the lights on dash came on but would not do anything at all.
We tried to jump it thinking it was battery but did not work, then my son checked voltage on battery and it was good. he then found the ground wire off and when he got a wire and held it there, the van started to turn over.
The clips that were holding the ground on are rusted and we can not get the new wire on them, so I bought big allagator clip ones and they melted.

I'm Assuming this is a 3.3 V6? Look inside the red circles. My guess is One of those wires has either come loose , or rotted off.

The link was a picture of the grounding locations and battery cable routing, but it is for the V6

I can get the 4 cylinder picture of the same, but...I still cant get you to view it.....

I'll think of something......
