Default Radio Hiccups Chrysler Aspen

This is my first post, but I felt it was needed because of some issues with my daughter's 2007 Chrysler Aspen 5.7 Limited, an aftermarket radio install with premium Alpine sound. I purchased a couple of harnesses that did not work with the vehicle as described on their site. But the one that did work is the PAC RP4-CH11-A. If you order this it comes with two harnesses, A and B, The A harness is what you need for premium systems with factory amp. After thoroughly reading the instructions and soldering the harness wiring to the Radio wiring according to the diagram, I found that the instructions were not too clear (uhmm, that's being nice). On the Premium system, because the system is controlled by a can-bus, the factory harness does not have all the speaker wires that come out of the back of your new radio (that info is just in case you were scratching your head). The RP4-CH11-A harness does have them, yeah!. However, the instructions are not clear on which speaker wires to use. Sure they show a diagram, but for the ASPEN it is not correct. After wiring it up accordingly, there was no sound and the warning lights on the instrument Panel would flash every 3-10 seconds with ign on or car running. Yes, very erratic and wigged-out behavior. I was freaking out. Never seen anything like it. But there is an answer.

Let me clarify the instructions: They state: on page two: "Connect the front outputs of the aftermarket radio to the rear inputs of the vehicle connector"..."The Rear speaker outputs of the aftermarket radio are not used" This is because the factory Amp is two channels not four. Now for a novice like me, that is Greek. So what I found out is that instead of connecting the speaker wires to the new harness logically as white to white, white/black to white/black, green to green, green/black to green/black, purple to purple, purple/black to purple/black, grey to grey and grey/black to grey/black (that is the logical way to connect wires) -- instead on the Aspen you tape off the purple and purple/black, and the green and green/black wires coming out of the radio, they are NOT USED. Then, get this, the interpretation of the unclear instructions above, coming OUT Of THE RADIO you must connect the white wire to the RP4-CH11-A purple wire, the white/black to the purple/black. the grey to the green and the grey/black to the green/black. this will get you closer to the audio working all around on all speakers, but not yet.

Next, you will find many people online stating that you must connect the blue/white wire of the new harness to the RED ACC 12v. On some vehicles this is true. But on the Aspen, the Blue/white wire will connect to the blue wire coming out of the radio (antenna.amp wire). This is a can-bus thing. The signal for ACC comes from the small blue SWC box through the blue/white wire that you connected to the radio blue wire.

Next, and this is why the sound did not work and the instrument panel was going insane, you must cut the pink/black wire in the harness in half and tape it off. it messes with the Aspen system and voila!!, the audio will work front to rear and side to side. Also with power on, make sure the heat-shrunk relay with a yellow wire and two red wires is working (test with a test light or volt meter. If not, replace it. The four-pronged connector that comes with the RP4-CH11-A, and connects to the rear of the blue box, is a Steering Wheel Control adaptor. Ignore the 3.5mm unless your radio has that on the rear, (NOT a MIC connection). use the single wire to connect to SWC 1 coming out of your radio. If your radio has two SWC wires coming out the back, only use SWC 1 (They may be marked differently that that). All other wire-to-wire instructions are correct. After doing all of the above the system sounds amazing.

Hope this helps someone who was as bewildered as I was.
